چکیده

AARON is a program designed to investigate the cognitive principles underlying visual representation. Under continuous development for fifteen years, it is now able autonomously to make "freehand" drawings of people in garden-like settings. This has required a complex interplay between two bodies of knowledge: objectspecific knowledge of how people are constructed and how they move, together with morphological knowledge of plant growth: and procedural knowledge of representational strategy. AARON's development through the events leading up to this recently-implemented knowledgebased form is discussed as an example of an "expert's system" as opposed to an "expert system." AARON demonstrates that, given appropriate interaction between domain knowledge and knowledge of representational strategy, relatively rich representations may result from sparse information.

Do We Really Reason about a Picture as the Referent?

A significant portion of the previous accounts of inferential utilities of graphical representations (e.g., Sloman, 1971; Larkin & Simon, 1987) implicitly relies on the existence of what may be called inferences through hypothetical drawing. However, conclusive detections of them by means of standard performance measures have turned out to be difficult (Schwartz, 1995). This paper attempts to f...

Perceptual representation of visible surfaces

It has long been recognized that a convincing pictorial representation of an object can sometimes be achieved by drawing just a few critical lines. Consider, for example, the photograph of a Henry Moore sculpture that is presented in the left panel of Figure 1 and the line drawing of this object that is presented in the right panel. Although the line drawing leaves out many salient aspects of t...

Organization of arm movements. Motion is segmented.

A kinematic analysis of human arm trajectories which underlie the production of learned, continuous movements (such as drawing of 'figure 8s' and stars) in free space is presented. The objective of this investigation was to see if a set of rules, which had been identified previously and which are appropriate for generating circular or elliptical motion of the wrist in an arbitrary plane, also h...
